Although the MINI WRC Team is not set to break cover until Rally d’Italia Sardegna in May at the earliest, news of its entry into the World Rally Championship has sent shockwaves throughout the sport.
MINI is one of rallyings most iconic and celebrated names. While its success on the stages was achieved before the advent of the World Rally Championship in 1973, the makes giant-killing exploits in the 1960s on events such as the Monte Carlo Rally is the stuff of legend.
While MINI wont be registered for manufacturers championship points in 2011, the Prodrive-run team will use its planned six-event programme to develop the MINI WRC in the heat of competition ahead of a full assault on the global series in 2012.
Beyond confirming Kris Meeke and Dani Sordo as its drivers for 2011, the use of BMW Motorsports 1.6-litre turbo engine and its technical partnership with Prodrive, the MINI WRC Team is holding back on confirming the finer details of its WRC bid so watch this space for more news over the coming months...
